Sand Slime

Our family spent a day at the beach this past weekend and my kids had a blast playing in the sand. We decided to recreate the fun at home, but with a fun twist, and made sand slime! The kids loved oozing the sandy goo through their fingers. To add an element of science fun, try experimenting with different ratios of glue and liquid starch to form slime of varying consistencies.

  • Step 4

Measure out 1/2 cup of liquid starch. Add about half into the mixture and give it a good stir. When it’s mixed well, add in the rest of the liquid starch. Make sure to stir around the edges to incorporate everything together.

  • Step 5

For best results, let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes. (But if you can't wait that long, you can start playing with it right away!)

  • Tip

Store the slime in a zip bag to prevent drying out

    What’s happening?
The glue contains some super-long molecules called polymers. Adding the liquid starch causes a reaction called cross-linking. Once this happens, the long polymer molecules stick to each other and forms a slime-like consistency!
