This month, you and your baby will explore:
cause and effect
Your little baby can make big things happen — and they’re beginning to figure that out. At 5–6 months, they’re actively changing their environment by knocking over a toy or making something make a sound.
language & communication
Your baby loves hearing you talk! They’re soaking up language, and at 5–6 months they are likely to start babbling and taking turns vocalizing with you. Encourage these attempts at speech by repeating the sounds your baby makes. A back-and-forth dialogue where you speak and then pause to listen helps your baby pick up the cues of conversation and sets the stage for real words later.
color recognition
As the sense of sight matures and expands, your baby is discovering the magic of colors. Welcome Roy G. Biv into your baby’s world by describing the hue of every object you see — your little one may even babble back with some “colors” of their own.
early math sense
OK, so your baby may still be a few years from solving for X, doing your taxes, or even counting to three. But research shows that infants can understand basic math concepts, like quantity (more and less) and classification (same and different). Help set a foundation for future skills with “math talk” — using comparison words like big and little (measurement), describing everyday routines (pattern), and of course, counting!
touch
From their earliest moments, your baby has loved — and learned from — touch. Gentle touch from a grownup helps stimulate brain development. And incorporating interesting textures into play helps inspire your baby to work on skills like grip and coordination.
hearing
Your baby is learning a lot about noise — for one thing, that they can make it! Especially fascinating at this age is their growing appreciation of tone and an increased desire to explore new sounds. Exposing them to many different sounds and styles of music (not too loud!) helps develop auditory skills.
fine motor & grasp
Your baby is ready to grab the world and shake it up a little, too! As they build dexterity, grasping and manipulating objects with those little paws becomes more intentional. Encourage them by offering objects like rattles that make noise when you move them.
hand-to-hand transfer & bilateral coordination
Your baby is building the skills needed to pass an object from one hand to the other. Bilateral coordination — using both sides of the body together — is improving as the two sides of the brain work together. This enables the coordination they’ll need later for everything from riding a bike to tooting a kazoo.
spatial awareness
Your baby started developing spatial awareness at birth, but they’ll still be working out where their body is in relation to other things for a while. Right now, their depth perception is improving, helping them discern distance and distinguish 3-D shapes. You might notice them reach — and adjust — to grab that shiny toy.
