Did you know? Your toddler’s motor skills progress from head to foot, meaning that walking, running, and kicking are all signs that the motor cortex is revving up!
This month, you and your toddler will explore:
gross motor
Who needs a gym membership? With all that squatting, crawling, lifting up, sitting down, and even walking, your kid’s large muscles (the ones in their legs, arms, and torso) are getting an intensive daily workout. And as their personal trainer, it’s your job to tell them to keep going — they’re getting stronger by the day!
fine motor
Turning pages, stacking cups, dropping blocks into a shape sorter — your kid is doing anything and everything to hone those hand and finger muscles. But it’s not all fun and games. Encouraging “non-play” skills — like feeding themselves and putting toys away — are also important steps to building fine-motor mastery.
cause and effect
Did someone unravel the toilet paper roll again? That’s classic toddler: pushing, poking, and pulling things to see what happens. Encourage their curiosity (and protect the toilet paper) with the help of cause-and-effect activities such as ball-rolling, bubble- popping, and block-toppling.
hand-eye coordination
Training your brain to align what your eyes see with what your hands do is no small feat. Thankfully, your kid is strengthening this critical skill all the time — through pegboards, puzzles, and other forms of play.
independent play
Playing alone teaches children to be self-reliant, creative, and comfortable in their own company. So give your child room to tackle puzzles independently, “read” their favorite books, and play pretend. It’s the best way to say you can do it on your own (and with me, too!).
social development
At this age, children may begin to engage in parallel play. This means that instead of playing directly with another child, they’ll be more comfortable playing near or alongside them. Even if they are immersed in their own activities, they are learning to be more social in the presence of other kids.
tracking
From catching balls to reading books, your kid is learning to quickly and accurately rack an object. Help keep their eyes on the visual prize by challenging them to point things out (like your nose or a bird flying by), catch a rolling ball, or pop a floating bubble.
balance & coordination
Walking, climbing, and even sitting all require balance and coordination. While your child is practicing, you might see the toddler “Frankenstein” walk — arms stretched out to keep steady. You’ll also witness plenty of stumbles, falls, and bumps. Safe spaces and supportive words will get them up and running soon enough.
