This month, you and your toddler will explore:
shape & color recognition
Shapes are symbols — just like letters and numbers. So learning to identify, sort, and organize shapes (Balls are circles! Roofs are triangles!) is a key part of your little one’s early literacy and math development. As your toddler starts to notice shapes, they may also start recognizing colors — have patience, this skill takes time!
problem-solving
At 18 months, your baby is starting to get mighty resourceful. They might copy a grownup, use a found object as a tool, or try different approaches to solve a problem.
matching & sorting
Matching, sorting, and grouping things helps your little one build reasoning skills. Of course, calling all four-legged animals “cats” might not sound very reasonable, but there’s a method to their matching mayhem.
fine motor
From turning door knobs to building block towers to feeding themselves with a spoon, your toddler is hard at work refining their small muscles. So what if sometimes more food gets on their chin than in their mouth? Precision takes practice (and patience)!
gross motor
Whether they’re making their move (walking, running, clambering up stairs) or making things move (hurling balls and beanbags . . . and the odd spoon), your little one needs to hone their large muscles to make it happen. Enjoy this wonderful time (and maybe double-check the childproofing)!
hand-eye coordination
As your kiddo practices and improves their hand-eye coordination, they’ll get better at matching what they see with where their body is in space — so they can reach, grasp, and point with precision.
