Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

We used an inexpensive 8"x10" canvas for this project. There is something about using canvas for paintings that makes Emma feel so grown up, and it ensures better survival of her artwork for me!

  • Step 2

First, she used small pieces of masking tape to make a bird image on the canvas.

I loved seeing how her bird came out. So cute.

  • Step 4

Next, the fun part. She dipped her little fingers in the paint and started making dots, slowly filling in the bird.

  • Step 5

Oh, how she loved this step and enjoyed seeing her fingers in several different pastel colors.

  • Step 6

She picked out these colors, but you could do any sort of color scheme. I was thinking it would be neat to have her do a chicken image in the colors of my kitchen.

  • Step 7

As the dots covered more and more area they started to blend together. It was looking really beautiful.

  • Final result!

Once dry we simply removed the tape and had a beautiful bird painting. Emma was so proud of her work and even more proud when I asked her to sign it.
