Caramel Apple Monsters

Fall is my favorite time of year...and my kids love it too because it means apple picking! We have a tree right in our backyard that provides a daily snack for the kids. With Halloween just around the corner, we decided to take the after-school snack to the next level and make "Monster Caramel Apples." The kids loved making them as much as they relished gobbling their treats down!

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

Start by prepping your ingredients. We bought a kit from the grocery store for our caramel apples. The kit comes with the sticks and caramel all ready to go--but you can melt caramel candies down in a microwave-safe bowl as well. For decorations, we used slivered almonds, raisins, marshmallows, and chocolate chips (a good mix of healthy and sweet).

  • Step 2

To prepare the apples, stick the Popsicle stick in the top of the apple. Then let an adult take a sharp knife and cut a little slice out of the apple for the mouth. (You can skip this step and just decorate a mouth.) Swirl the apple in the melted caramel, and place it on a lightly greased plate.

  • Step 3

While the caramel is still warm and soft, let the kids decorate to their hearts' content. They can use toothpicks to create arms and bunny ears, as my three-year-old did.

  • Step 4

Slivered almonds made great teeth, and chocolate chips or raisins are a fun way to create eyes.

  • Final result!

We stuck the apples in the fridge for a bit to let the caramel harden, but you can eat them up right away. The kids loved making a little monster family. One for everyone, and these creepy cute monsters were delicious as well!
