Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

    1. Mix 1 cup of lemon juice, 1 cup of sugar, and 4 cups of water in a large pitcher to make lemonade.

  • Step 2

    2. Fill the glass with ice then add some lemonade.

  • Step 3

    3. Pour red cabbage juice into the lemonade and watch the colors change! You can add water or sugar to taste.

  • Final result!

Use this lemonade experiment to surprise your friends! Freeze the cabbage juice in an ice tray. Add the cabbage juice ice cubes to the lemonade and watch the color change from yellow to pink as the ice cubes melt! What's going on? Lemon juice is naturally full of citric acid and red cabbage juice is an acid-base indicator. When the cabbage juice mixes with the citric acid in the lemonade it turns pink to show that the liquid is acidic!
