Step-by-step tutorial
Step 1
I began by drawing the traditional tic-tac-toe grid with a marker on some parchment paper. I chose parchment paper for easy clean-up, but you can use regular paper if don't have any parchment.
Step 2
Then, I filled 6 clear cups with water and added yellow food coloring. That was our "base" color for playing the game.
Step 3
Then, I mixed water for a blue, red, and another yellow cup. Those served as our "mix-in" colors. I also left an eyedropper there for my daughter to use to dispense the coloring.
Step 4
I reviewed the rules of the game with my daughter and told her she needed to make 3 colors in a row today. As she thought, we talked about what colors make what when they are mixed together.
Step 5
She was thoughtful and decided to try for 3 greens in a row. Here she has played (and made) 2 greens and I have made one orange.
Step 6
This was also special for my daughter because she loved seeing the colors change right before her eyes!
Step 7
She did it! 3 green in a row and my attempt at some oranges in a row. She beat me!
Final result!
Have fun playing color mixing tic-tac-toe. After you're done playing, you can just have fun making new colors.
