Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

Find a large stick in your yard to use for a fishing pole. Tie a piece of string or yarn around the end of the stick. At the end of the string, glue on a magnet. I used the small circle magnets that have sticky backs. I stuck a magnet on each side of the string. I added a dot of hot glue between them to help keep them together.

  • Step 2

Cut the pipe cleaners in half. Bend each one into a loop and twist the ends to make the tail.

  • Step 3

Put the fish into the "water" (a blue piece of paper). Use your fishing pole to catch the fish.

  • Final result!

She was so excited to see the fish on the end! Because the pipe cleaners have metal in them, they jump onto the magnets at the end of the pole. Ask questions like: What color fish did you catch? Can you catch a red fish? How many fish did you catch? You can also make some fish using a whole pipe cleaner instead of just half and, as you catch the fish, sort them into two piles (big vs. small).
