Kid Business Quick-Start Guide
1. Pick a product. Start with crafts that your child is familiar with and enjoys. (For example, if they like making colorful pom-poms, they might want to make pom-pom keychains.)
2. Name the brand. Ask your child to describe who their product is for and what makes it special. (Top of the list: it’s handmade!) Then use the answers to create a name and description. (This is also great practie for writing and communication skills.)
3. Calculate your costs. Math time! Start by listing the cost of each material you need to buy to create your first batch, then add them up to figure out your start-up cost.
4. Set your pricing. If your kid has ever complained that practicing division is pointless, this is your answer. To set a price, they need to figure out the cost of materials needed to make a single product. (For example, if a $5 skein of yarn can make 10 pom-poms, the yarn cost per pom-pom is $0.50.)
Put it all together and your kid will have the start of a uniquely cool creative biz!
Crafts for a Creative Kid Business
Some kids will have a clear idea of what they want to make, but others may need a little prompting and guidance. To start out with, it’s best to keep it simple and relatively quick to make, so look for crafts that can be done in batches and that don’t require hours to make. Being able to customize the color or design is also helpful, so that kids can bring their own creative point of view. Check out our collection of craft ideas below to get inspired!
Rainbow Bath Bombs

Wrap up your bath bombs in a small plastic gift bag and tie them up with a bow, or make stickers with your business name and stick them on the front!
Pom-Pom Keychains

Customize your keychains by making them in your favorite colors, using different color palettes, or with your school colors to make them the perfect backpack accessory.
Wood Bead Friendship Bracelets

Friendship bracelets are even better with a custom message. Make some versions with your favorite celebrity’s name, fun phrases, song lyrics, or anything you want!
Dinosaur Soap
Go beyond dinosaurs and embed other small toys! Make a layered blue and white version with a toy boat to set sail, or add some flowers for a sudsy springtime soap.
Sand Art

Package these up in small jars to show off the colorful layers, and invite younger siblings to help you fill them for a fun, hands-on experience for everyone.
Clay Initial Keychains

Air-dry clay is easy to use, so this is perfect for kids! Change up the font by using different shape cutters, or dip the finished product into paint for a fun two-tone look.
